PROPHET ‘EYSA – PEACE BE UPON HIM

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

BEING THE SECOND SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF R/AWWAL 14/R. AWWAL/1437AH (25/DEC/2015CE)

PROPHET ‘EYSA – PEACE BE UPON HIM

Praise be to Allah, who informed through the holy qur’an that Prophet ‘Eysaa said: (قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا (30) وَجَعَلَنِي مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنْتُ وَأَوْصَانِي بِالصَّلَاةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا (31) وَبَرًّا بِوَالِدَتِي وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِي جَبَّارًا شَقِيًّا (32) وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدْتُ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا (33) ذَلِكَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ قَوْلَ الْحَقِّ الَّذِي فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ (34) مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ مِنْ وَلَدٍ سُبْحَانَهُ إِذَا قَضَى أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ)  “[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.( 31 )   And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive ( 32 )   And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.( 33 )   And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.” ( 34 )   That is Jesus, the son of Mary – the word of truth about which they are in dispute.( 35 )   It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.”  We praise and thank Him, we believe and depend on him. We seek his refuge from the evil of ourselves and our deeds. Whomever Allah guides is truly guided and whomever He misleads none can guide. I testify there is no god but Allah alone and that our leader- Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger, the best person that ever called to the path of Allah, and treaded the path of truth.” O Allah shower peace and blessings on him, his household, companions and whoever follow their guidance and footsteps till the day of return.

Having said that,

Worshipers of Allah, I enjoin you and myself to fear Allah, the Almighty, in the open and the secret. Allah says:  (…وَاتَّقُونِ يَاأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ ) “And fear Me, O you of understanding ” (2: 197 ).

Dear Muslims, with reference to the feeling at the moment when Christians celebrate the Christmas on 25th day of December, we would like to inform you Muslims of the status of Prophet ‘Eysa in Islam.

Prophet ‘Eysa, the son of Mar’yam (peace be upon them) in Islam

Prophet ‘Eysa (AS) holds a special status in Islam; he is believed to be a soul created by the command from Allah, and His word which He directed to the virgin Mary (Mary’am). The faith of a Muslim is deficient without the belief in him; equally enough reason to be denied of entrance to paradise to end up in the fire. It is mandatory on Muslims to speak of prophet ‘Eysa and his mother- Mar’yam with honour and accompany his name with the appellation- “Alayhi –s- Salaam” (Peace be on him).

Much of the verses of the Qur’an mention Prophet ‘Eysa and the mother- (AS). Allah says:

(إِنَّمَا المَسِيحُ عيسى بْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ الله وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاَهَا إِلى مَرْيَمَ وَرُوحُ مِنْهُ) “The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him.” (4: 171)

And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit.” (2: 87)

(إِذْ قَالَتْ المَلائِكَةُ يَا مَرْيَمُ إِنْ اللهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنْهُ اْسْمُهُ المَسِيحُ عِيسَى بْنُ مَرْيَمَ وَجِيهاً فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَمِنْ المُقَرَّبِينْ ﴾ [آل عمران:3\ 45])  [And mention] when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary – distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah].” (3: 45)

The Qur’an described him as good news to humanity, a savior, a leader, and guidance to his followers by Allah’s permission.  The Qur’an mentions his name 25 times, it also purify his name from all false accusations.

Prophet ‘Eysa- the Messiah as mentioned in the Qur’an

From his miraculous birth:

And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. ( 17 )   And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. ( 18 )   She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.”( 19 )   He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.”

Jibreel (AS) breathe into Mar’yam and that resulted in the pregnancy by Allah’s permission:

“And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of ‘Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.” (66: 12)

How the Qur’an honours Prophet ‘Eysa

We Muslim believe he is a distinguished person of honour in this world and the hereafter, and among those brought near to Allah. We invoke peace and blessings on him. In contrast to this, he has been mentioned in the divine books with such derogatory attributes which, when used for a common person, no sensible person would accept his friendship. He has been called a liar, blasphemer, bastard. He was reported to have been tortured, stripped naked and crucified in humiliation. If it were to be a Muslim that have such derogatory attribute to Prophet ‘Eysa, he would have been called a Kafir, outrightly. The scholars are unanimous as well that he who abuses any prophet abuses all prophets even Jesus mentioned in the bible- who in true sense is Prophet ‘Eysa (AS).

[And mention] when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary – distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah].” (3: 45)

His Life:

The Qur’an described him as a mortal like us, who eats and drinks from what we consume, he carries out his like humans. Allah alone is free all human needs; including food and drink, He is the creator of all. This is to refute the claim of Christians that Jesus is god. God needs no food or drink. Allah describes ‘Eysa thus:

(﴿ مَّا الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ إِلاَّ رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ وَأُمُّهُ صِدِّيقَةٌ كَانَا يَأْكُلاَنِ الطَّعَامَ انظُرْ كَيْفَ نُبَيِّنُ لَهُمُ الآيَاتِ ثُمَّ انظُرْ أَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ [المائدة:5\75]) “The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.” (5: 75)

Born without a father

The Christians claim since Jesus came to life without a father, then God is his father and he is the son of God. But the Qur’an declares that the birth of Jesus is like that of Adam. Infact judging by the background elements involved in the coming to life of both Adam and Jesus (AS) we could conclude that Adam that came to existence from mere dust, without pregnancy, nor nursing, should be made a god using this line of thinking. Allah says:

(﴿إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَى عِندَ اللّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ خَلَقَهُ مِن تُرَابٍ ثِمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ [آل عمران:3\59])  Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was.” (3: 59)

Prophet ‘Eysa (AS); A prophet and messenger of Allah.

Traditionally, Allah sends Prophets to humanity to make clear to them the ‘Aqeedah- faith, so that they could worship Him truly. Allah says: (﴿إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ بَشِيراً وَنَذِيراً وَإِن مِّنْ أُمَّةٍ إِلَّا خلَا فِيهَا نَذِيرٌ [فاطر:35\24])  Indeed, We have sent you with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner.” (35: 24). Similarly, Prophet ‘Eysa was sent as a messenger of Allah to make things clear. Allah states: (﴿إِنَّا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ كَمَا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى نُوحٍ وَالنَّبِيِّينَ مِن بَعْدِهِ وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالأَسْبَاطِ وَعِيسَى وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُونُسَ وَهَارُونَ وَسُلَيْمَانَ وَآتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ زَبُوراً [النساء:4\163]) “Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And we revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].” (4: 163)

The Miracles of Prophet ‘Eysa (AS)

Allah- swt- informs us in the Qur’an that he supported Prophets ‘Eysa (AS) with signs and miracles as a proof for his prophethood and support for those who believe in him.

Some of the miracles with which Allah supported him includes:

1- He spoke to the people in the cradle        2- Allah taught him writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel               3- He designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with Allah’s permission   4- He healed the blind and the leper with Allah’s permission            5- He brought forth the dead with Allah’s permission               6- He asked for descend of a table [spread with food] from the heaven.

The Qur’an explains these in the following verses:

[The Day] when Allah will say, “O Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, “This is not but obvious magic.” (5: 110)

[And remember] when the disciples said, “O Jesus, Son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven? [Jesus] said,” Fear Allah, if you should be believers.” ( 113 )   They said, “We wish to eat from it and let our hearts be reassured and know that you have been truthful to us and be among its witnesses.” Said Jesus, the son of Mary, “O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.” (5: 112- 114)

The disciples of Jesus

People accused Prophet ‘Eysa (AS) of performing magic, similar to how earlier Prophets were accused. Instead of accepting his message, they fled away from him. Prophet ‘Eysa sought the support of the disciples for the propagation of the message and they agreed to it. Allah says: (﴿ فَلَمَّا أَحَسَّ عِيسَى مِنْهُمُ الْكُفْرَ قَالَ مَنْ أَنصَارِي إِلَى اللّهِ قَالَ الْحَوَارِيُّونَ نَحْنُ أَنصَارُ اللّهِ آمَنَّا بِاللّهِ وَاشْهَدْ بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ [آل عمران:3\52]) “But when Jesus felt [persistence in] disbelief from them, he said, “Who are my supporters for [the cause of] Allah?” The disciples said, “We are supporters for Allah. We have believed in Allah and testify that we are Muslims [submitting to Him].” (3: 52)

Crucifixion of Jesus

The said he was stripped naked, cloth with a crimson coloured robe, with a thorny crown placed on his head, after great torture and humiliation. After that he was crucified and cried out for help from the father: “My lord, My lord, why Hath Thou forsaken me.”

But could Allah forsaken His friends when they call Him?

The account in the Qur’an disproves of the crucifixion, and goes on to declare that Allah raised him in safety from the plot of the jews to kill him:

( 157 )   And [for] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. ( 158 )   Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise. (4: 157- 158)

[Mention] when Allah said, “O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.” (3: 55)

Islam regards as disbelievers those that call Allah the third of the three- trinity.

They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the third of three.” And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.” (5: 73)

In another verse Allah declares those that call Jesus to be God:

“They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.” (5: 72)

Prophet ‘Eysa denies all the false accusations

And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, “O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'” He will say, “Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.” (5: 116)

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, “Three”; desist – it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.” (4: 171)

SECOND KHUTBAH

All praises are due to Allah, the lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad, his household, companions and believers till the end of time.

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.” (2: 120)

Dear faithful, at this moment, the common question around is; “Is it right to partake with the disbelievers in their festival?”

The answer is that it is not right based on the following reasons:

1- The Prophet (SAW) said: “He who imitates a people is part of them.”

2- Joining them is a form of allegiance and show of love for their disbelief. (O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. (5: 51))

3- For Muslims, matters of the religion are equally matters of faith and not mere worldly based culture or tradition. The Prophet said: “For every nation is a festival, and this is our festival.” However, their festival is a false faith involved with associating partner with Allah as well as acts of disbelief.

4- Allah says: “And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood …” (25: 72) Scholars have described this verse to refer to the festivals of the disbelievers; it is not right to send gifts of cards or sell it to them on such occasions, including all things used for such purpose, such as lights, trees, food, chicken, etc

A scholar was asked regarding partaking in the celebrations of non- Muslims in order to attract them to join us in our celebration.

He answered thus: “If the celebration is that of the festivals of the disbelievers and polytheists, it is not right. For that is a form of support for them on sins and enmity. It also represents imitation of disbelievers warned against in the hadith: “He who imitates a people is part of them.” (Abu Dawud). Also, “Shun the enemies of Allah in their festivals.” (Bayhaqi)

However, when the partaking is for a banquet for instance, and the occasion is devoid of all what the Sharia warned against; such as free mixing, consumption of forbidden things like intoxicants, swine, dancing, music etc, and provided the occasion is a form of allegiance to them, then, there is no sin in honouring the invitation, and to strive to inform them about Islam. The prophet as well honour the invitation of some Jews. Allah knows best.

Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”
